11.3 Anti–infective eye preparations

11.3.1 Antibacterials

  • A preservative free option (or single unit dose drops) may be prescribed if available for all formulary products listed if clinically necessary, as an alternative option
  • Please ensure that all prescriptions for eye drops clearly state the number of drops, into which eye(s), and the frequency of administration

 

Recommended: (TLS Green)

Chloramphenicol 0.5% eye drops

Chloramphenicol 1% eye ointment

Fusidic acid 1% viscous eye drops

Alternatives: (TLS Blue)

Gentamicin 0.3% eye drops

Levofloxacin 0.5% eye drops

Eye Hospital use only: (TLS Red)

Azithromycin 1.5% eye drops

  • Patients with Trachomatous conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. To be used in addition to currently used systemic treatment
  • Purulent bacterial conjunctivitis in pregnant women and children
  • An alternative 3rd line treatment in purulent bacterial conjunctivitis in adults (currently fusidic acid 1% MR eye drops)

Cefuroxime 5% eye drops (unlicensed)

Erythromycin 0.5% eye ointment (unlicensed)

Gentamicin 1.5% eye drops (unlicensed)

Hexamidine 0.1% eye drops (unlicensed)

PHMB (Polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride) 0.02% and 0.06% eye drops (unlicensed)

Vancomycin 1.4% eye drops (unlicensed)

Vancomycin 5% eye drops (unlicensed)

Chlorhexidine 0.02% eye drops (unlicensed)

Specific indication:

Vancomycin 50mg/mL (unlicensed) (TLS Red)

  • For LASIK (Laser in situ Keratomileusis)

Amikacin 35mg/mL (unlicensed) (TLS Red)

  • For LASIK (Laser in situ Keratomileusis)

Moxifloxacin 0.5% eye drops (Moxivig®) (TLS Red)

  • Second line for microbial keratitis where patients are unresponsive to first line treatment with levofloxacin

Cefuroxime injection (Aprokam®) (TLS Red)

  • Antibiotic prophylaxis of postoperative endophthalmitis after cataract surgery

 

11.3.2 Antifungals

Eye Hospital only: (TLS Red)

Amphotericin 0.15% eye drops (unlicensed)

Voriconazole 1% eye drops (unlicensed)

Chlorhexidine 0.2% eye drops (unlicensed)

 

11.3.3 Antivirals

Aciclovir 3% eye ointment (TLS Amber Specialist Recommended)

Ganciclovir 0.15% eye gel (TLS Amber Specialist Recommended)
