The following guide is for children aged under 16. Patients aged 16 and over can be referred using adult services.
Plain X-rays and some USS can be directly requested by GPs - see details in the sections below.
CT/MRI scans cannot be ordered directly by GPs for under 16 year olds in BNSSG. They should be referred to the appropriate speciality where a paediatrician will order if necessary.
The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) will accept appropriate requests from Primary Care for X-Ray and Ultrasound. These should be submitted on ICE*.

NBT will accept appropriate requests from Primary Care for paediatric X-Ray. These should be submitted on ICE
X-ray – Plain X-rays for children can be requested at NBT via an ICE request.
Ultrasound scans – Primary Care cannot refer to NBT for ultrasound scans for patients under 16 year olds. Some are carried out internally on request of NICU/Paeds team at NBT.
All other paediatric US requests should go to BRHC as above (please check list of exclusions above before ordering).
WGH will accept appropriate requests from Primary Care for paediatric X-Ray. These should be submitted on ICE.
Ultrasound scans – WGH do not do ultrasound scans on patients under 16 years old.
