Community Phlebotomy

Community phlebotomy is a process for taking bloods on behalf of secondary care (when they have been requested on ICE by the specialist team). This is separate to the arrangements for domiciliary blood requests, which are undertaken by the Sirona Nursing Teams (see the Nursing pages for details)

Full details about Community Phlebotomy (Secondary Care Bloods) can be found on TeamNet: Community Phlebotomy (secondary care bloods) (clarity.co.uk)

Please ensure practice staff use the latest F12 protocol to code correctly according to the phlebotomy SOP found on TeamNet.

Please remember to check your ability to sample from both UHBW and NBT ICE systems. All practices should have dual licences in place as part of this work. The delegated request will be on the ICE system of the trust the patient is under, dated the day the patient was reviewed by the secondary care clinician.

If you have any problems with this process please get in touch with Digital@onecare.org.uk

Phlebotomy at BRI

The Phlebotomy service at Bristol Royal Infirmary is primarily for hospital outpatients however a service is still available for the following primary care adult patients:

  • Patients who require INR and Clozapine monitoring
  • Patients with difficult venous access. Please note attempts to obtain venous blood samples will only be made from the arm or hand
  • Patients who require complex samples to be taken or where samples require immediate separation (e.g. homocysteine, gut hormones, renin aldosterone ratio etc.)

The process to access the service is as follows:

  • GP/ HCP to make a request on ICE (this must be UHBW ICE) for the blood test required. All tests that are likely to be required by GPs should be available on ICE so if you can't find on initial search then keep looking. Please do not use the clinical details box to request tests that are not listed. Alternatively you can complete a paper blood form (if available) ensuring you include three patient identifiers.
  • Patients should then attend the Phlebotomy clinic on A410 and take a numbered ticket to join the queue and have their bloods done on the day

Paediatric Phlebotomy at the Bristol Children's Hospital

Please see the Paediatric Phlebotomy page in the Children's section of Remedy. Please note UH Bristol’s Children’s Hospital is unable to carry out blood tests on a drop in basis.
