Trial Without Catheter (TWOC)

Checked: 23-12-2022 by Vicky Ryan Next Review: 23-12-2023

Community TWOC

TWOC can often be managed in the community. The community continence service suggests using a catheter valve for one week prior to the TWOC to enable the patient to get used to the feeling of a full bladder. The district nurses (Sirona) can then usually supervise the TWOC in the community.

Referrals should be made to the Community Nursing Team in the usual way (EMIS form - managed referral). See the Nursing pages for details.

For further advice then the Community Bladder and Bowel Services are a good resource.

TWOC Referral Service - NBT

The TWOC Referral Service is a nurse led clinic and not a referral for a review by the urology team.

The Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) website has been updated with a section on urinary retention, NBT pathways, forms and troubleshooting guides. Please refer to this when referring patients in for TWOCs https://www.nbt.nhs.uk/bristol-urological-institute/bui-clinicians/urinary-retention-trial-without-catheter-service

Referral to TWOC service

There are separate male and female TWOC referral forms which can be found in EMIS or on the BUI website (see above).

Please email the completed form to UrologyTWOCReferrals@nbt.nhs.uk and you should receive email acknowledgement.

Please note: Reference to referring via ICE on the BUI website is only available to internal NBT and BRI ED referrals not GPs.
