Loss of Libido

Checked: 23-12-2021 by Vicky Ryan Next Review: 23-12-2022

Overview

Loss of libido is a common problem but difficult to define as there is such a wide range of 'normal'. There is a useful article on Low Libido on the patient.co.uk website.

Referral

Referral for loss of or low libido should be guided by underlying cause.

The psychosexual clinic at Unity Sexual Health may be appropriate for some. To refer a patient to this service please write a letter and include a summary of all medical conditions, medication, treatments tried and relevant test results and email to: ubh-tr.unitypsychosexual@nhs.net

Relationship counselling with organisations such as Relate may also be worth considering.

NHS referral for prescribing of medication in the treatment of loss of libido is generally not recommended. However, Testosterone gel for use in the menopause, is currently an Amber drug on the BNSSG formulary so if patients meet the criteria, a referral can be made. Please see the Menopause page, for further details.

Efforts are made to ensure the accuracy and agreement of these guidelines, including any content uploaded, referred to or linked to from the system. However, BNSSG ICB cannot guarantee this. This guidance does not override the individual responsibility of healthcare professionals to make decisions appropriate to the circumstances of the individual patient, in consultation with the patient and/or guardian or carer, in accordance with the mental capacity act, and informed by the summary of product characteristics of any drugs they are considering. Practitioners are required to perform their duties in accordance with the law and their regulators and nothing in this guidance should be interpreted in a way that would be inconsistent with compliance with those duties.
