The BHOC Same Day Emergency Care is an emergency assessment unit for adult oncology and haematology (malignant and non-malignant) patients in the event that they develop complications or side effects of their disease or treatment. This service has a team, including Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Doctors and Staff Nurses. This service is specifically aimed at patients who are known to the BHOC and receiving treatment there.
Patients will be given a telephone number (0117 342 2011) to contact when they are acutely unwell which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They will be triaged over the phone by a nurse, doctor or ANP and if advised to come in, they will be assessed by either the Nurse Practitioner or Doctor, with an aim to make a decision to admit to hospital within 4 hours. Patients can self-refer via the 24 hour emergency telephone service. There may be occasions where the unit is full to capacity, in these cases the team will triage the patient to establish if they are safe to remain at home until capacity arises, or if the patient requires urgent assessment, they may be advised to attend their nearest ED department.
The service will also help health professionals in primary care, providing access to timely and expert advice on the management of symptoms and information to help make the right choice in terms of onward referral. Healthcare professionals can refer patients via face-to-face or telephone (0117 342 2011).
See the BHOC Acute Care web page for further details.
