Right to Choose (ADHD/ASD Patient Choice)

Checked: 02-06-2025 by Jenny Henry Next Review: 02-06-2027

Overview

The qualifying criteria for Right to Choose (RTC) is that a provider holds an NHS Standard Contract with an ICB in England or NHS England for the service requested. For patients wishing to choose a “Right to Choose” provider it is important the patient understands that the provider may not integrate with local BNSSG pathways and/or other services as the provider does not hold a contract directly with BNSSG ICB (Clinical Partners are commissioned to provide ADHD/Autism services for CYP/adults in BNSSG. Referrals can be made via https://www.clinical-partners.co.uk/nhs-services/right-to-choose or GP/SENCO referral form to rtc@clinical-partners.co.uk.)

It is advisable for the GP and patient to agree the most suitable provider as the referral must be “clinically appropriate” for the patient under choice framework.

RTC Providers - Summary

Please note:

Some RTC providers offer an assessment only service and post diagnostic support is not always available.

Where a provider has indicated availability of post diagnostic support, referrers/patients should contact them directly to check what this includes before making a decision on this basis. Some post diagnostic support offers for ADHD and Autism may be limited to signposting to other organisations; so patient expectation around this should be managed at the outset. The spreadsheet in the next section gives full details of provision and should be your main point of reference.

The Right to Choose providers known to BNSSG ICB, to date, that have a contract with another ICB in England and therefore can offer CYP/Adult ADHD and/or Autism assessment and treatment services under Right to Choose (patient choice) are:

RTC - current services offered, including referral information and exclusions

The attached spreadsheet  (updated on 28th July 2025) summarises the current services offered by RTC providers, including referral information and exclusions. See the relevant tab at the bottom of the page for ADHD/ASD Adults/Children.

Key changes since May 25

  • ADHD 360 new referral process in place – If practices have any backlogs of referrals these will need to be submitted in line with the new process.
  • Oakdale Therapies – Require patients to attend appointments face to face. For CYP they only do fully online assessments in exceptional circumstances.  Adults may be asked to attend the clinic if a need for this is picked up at triage and they also require patients to go to Halifax for physical health monitoring prior to titration of ADHD medication.
  • Skylight Psychiatry - Have temporarily stopped accepting referrals for ADHD/Autism until at least 14th July 2025

The list of Right to Choose providers above is not exhaustive. If a patient requests referral to a provider that is not listed then please email the mental health contracts team on bnssg.mh.contract@nhs.net who can check that the appropriate Right to Choose contract is in place. Please do not send patient identifiable data with your query; if further information is required, a member of the team will contact you.
