Overview

The Learning Disability & Autism Liaison Nurse Service are based at NBT and can support anyone with diagnosed learning disabilities and/or autism over 16 years old at NBT, BRI and WGH.

They support patients when they are admitted to hospital, or with appointments, procedures and operations.

The learning disability and autism team can:

  • Talk to patients and their family/carers when they are on a ward, to make sure they feel safe and supported
  • Support patients with appointments, procedures or operations
  • Talk to hospital staff to make sure that they support patients in a way that makes them feel safe and supported
  • Make sure that adjustments are made so that patients get the health care that they need at hospital
  • Support patients with understanding their own health
  • Share patient hospital passports and care plans with the hospital - NBT Accessible Hospital Passport & Autism Hospital Passport
  • Talk to the people that know the patient best to make sure that all the important information is shared about them(e.g. family, carers, community learning disability teams, community autism teams, GPs and social workers)

We have equipment to help reassure and distract them if needed:

  • Bags of calm
  • Noise cancelling headphones
  • Hospital communication books
  • Sensory lights
  • Music
  • Arts and craft materials
  • DVD players
