Overview - UHBW

UHBW (Bristol) Laboratory Medicine provides laboratory services in Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology. See the Laboratory Medicine website  for further information.

UH Bristol provides the following pathology services:-

Phlebotomy at BRI

The Phlebotomy service at Bristol Royal Infirmary is primarily for hospital outpatients. From September 2020, the A410 phlebotomy service for patients attending for routine GP requested blood tests was withdrawn.

A phlebotomy service is however still available for the following primary care adult patients:

  • Patients who require INR and Clozapine monitoring
  • Patients with difficult venous access. Please note attempts to obtain venous blood samples will only be made from the arm or hand
  • Patients who require complex samples to be taken or where samples require immediate separation (eg homocysteine, gut hormones, renin aldosterone ratio etc.)

Please be aware there is no ‘walk in’ service for phlebotomy. The process to access the service is as follows:

  • GP/ HCP to make a request on ICE (this must be UHBW ICE) for the blood test required. All tests that are likely to be required by GPs should be available on ICE so if you can't find on initial search then keep looking. Please do not use the clinical details box to request tests that are not listed. Alternatively you can complete a paper blood form (if available) ensuring you include three patient identifiers.
  • GP/HCP to provide the patient with the appointment centre contact number: 0117 342 6888
  • GP to advise patient to contact the appointment centre to book a suitable appointment

Paediatric Phlebotomy at the Bristol Children's Hospital

Please see the Paediatric Phlebotomy page in the Children's section of Remedy. Please note UH Bristol’s Children’s Hospital is unable to carry out blood tests on a drop in basis.

Pathology Day Unit

There is no specific Pathology Day Unit Service. Should you wish to discuss any aspect of clinical biochemistry patient investigation please ring the Duty Biochemist on 0117 342 7834 or the Paediatric Duty Biochemist on 0117 342 1299. Email advice requests may also be sent to biochemadvice@uhbristol.nhs.uk which is manned Mon – Fri, 9am – 5pm and aims to respond within one working day.

Requests for dynamic function tests (e.g. short Synacthen tests or water deprivation tests) should be referred to Endocrinology for further advice.
