Please see Malaria: guidance, data and analysis - GOV.UK for information about prevention, investigation and treatment of malaria.
There is also detailed information on diagnosis and management on the CKS website
Diagnosis is usually by thick and thin blood film in an EDTA tube but this should be discussed with the local infectious diseases team via Southmead switchboard (0117 9505050) as most people will need immediate referral to secondary care.
If initial testing is negative then further testing may be required to rule out infection.
Please discuss ALL cases of suspected Malaria in adults with the Infectious diseases SPR via NBT switchboard. In hours Monday -Friday 0900-16:00. Outside of these hours please discuss with the on call Microbiology Spr via Switchboard.
Malaria is a notifiable disease and if suspected then the local Health Protection Team should be informed.
