Uvula

Checked: 04-11-2024 by Rob Adams Next Review: 03-11-2026

Overview

It is rare for the uvula to cause any significant medical problems and surgery to remove the uvula is therefore not commissioned as described in the BNSSG ICB Surgical Removal of the Palatine Uvula Exceptional Funding Request Policy.

If malignancy of the uvula is suspected, then please refer via Urgent Suspected Cancer pathway.

Red Flags

Cancer of the uvula should be suspected if there is unexplained ulceration or a mass that persists for more than 3 weeks.

Please use see the USC Head and Neck page and refer by ticking the box:

'Unexplained ulceration of the oral cavity or mass persisting for more than 3 weeks'

Advice and Guidance

If you do not suspect malignancy but would like further advice then please consider the ENT advice and guidance.

Please provide a photo of the throat with your request. Advice on how to take a good quality photo of the throat can be found on this Youtube video.
