Adding a Drug to EMIS Web as a 'Hospital Issue'
Background
General practice held patient records should be complete with medication that the patient is taking from all other sources. This includes specialist prescribed medication that may be a red traffic light status drug on the BNSSG Joint Formulary e.g. Zoledronic acid.
This is important for patient safety - helping to ensure clinicians are aware of all medication a patient is currently taking when prescribing. Patients and clinicians are at increased risk if all medication that patients are taking is not recorded on the patient record. Safety features such as medication interaction warnings cannot work without a correct and complete patient medication record.
The recommended method of recording medication that is being prescribed by other care settings e.g. BNSSG Joint Formulary red or amber drugs is to add the medication to the patient’s current medication record as a ‘Hospital issue’.
The BNSSG Medicines Optimisation Team are in the process of creating a short training video demonstrating how to add a medication as a 'Hospital Issue'. In the interim, if you do require support, please discuss with your practice ICB Medicines Optimisation Pharmacist or contact bnssg.medicines-optimisation@nhs.net .
