Carer Assessment and Support

Checked: 05-08-2025 by Jenny Henry Next Review: 04-08-2027

Carer assessments

Any person who identifies themselves as a carer (excluding when the cared for person is living in care) can ask the local authority for a care assessment.

The benefits are:

  • To be listened to, recognised and have your feelings validated.
  • To support you to continue in your caring role (if you want to) by finding out from you what would help, we have given small cash payments, bought household items, paid for leisure/hobby classes/gym membership etc.
  • Think about other ways the person can be supported – day service for example.
  • The process will be person centred to the carer.

Here are the links for the 3 Local Authorities for their Carers Assessments:

Alternatively you can ring the front desks of the relevant Council:

  • Bristol – 0117 9222700 – Care Direct
  • North Somerset – 01934 426300 – Care Connect
  • South Glos – 01454 868007 – Customer Service Desk
